Sweeping Changes to Fishing Rules for the Fiordland Marine Area

The Fiordland Marine Guardians have welcomed widespread changes to the area’s recreational fishing rules, announced on Wednesday by the Minister for Oceans and Fisheries, Hon. Shane Jones. The new rules take effect on April 25th. The Guardians have advocated strongly for the changes and have been working with the community for several years to define the problems and develop solutions.

Minister accepts Guardians' recommendations for changes to amateur fishing rules for Fiordland

No less than three years after we began investigating concerns of over-fishing in the Fiordland (Te Moana o Atawhenua) Marine Area, we are pleased to announce new recreational fishing rules for the Fiordland Marine Area (FMA).

New Fiordland Marine Guardian appointed

Environment Minister David Parker recently appointed a new Fiordland Marine Guardian and re-appointed two existing Guardians. Dr Simon Childerhouse has joined the Guardians, while Ali Ballantine and Pete Young have been re-appointed.

Fisheries New Zealand has begun public consultation on proposed amendments to Amateur Fishing Regulations in the Fiordland (Te Moana o Atawhenua) Marine Area (FMA). The Fiordland Marine Guardians are seeking changes to the amateur fishing rules within the FMA to align them with the philosophy of 'fishing for a feed', not the freezer.
